UHMW (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) has all the characteristics of\u00a0high-density polyethylene\u00a0(HDPE), but it\u2019s also resistant to concentrated\u00a0acids, alkalis, and numerous organic solvents.\u00a0 The durable material is also resistant to abrasion, impact, and corrosion, while remaining lightweight.<\/p>\n
With all of this in mind, UHMW is often used to create food service cabinetry, docks, boom trucks and outrigger pads, guard rails, high-speed conveyors, bumpers, pile guards, and dock fenders.<\/p>\n

Before you figure out how to cut UHMW, you need to decide what tools you\u2019ll be using. Here are some ways to cut UHMW:<\/p>\n
Circular or band saw: <\/strong>You can use either when figuring out how to cut UHMW, but a band saw might be your best option since it will vent heat away from the plastic, which can melt if overheated. Opt for band saw blades 10-30mm wide and about 1-2mm thick with a circular pitch between 3 and 10mm.<\/p>\n Drilling: <\/strong>If you want to drill UHMW, be sure to go with lower RPM drilling, unless air, water, or cooling oils are used to keep plastic cool.<\/p>\n Welding: <\/strong>\u00a0Friction and butt welding are the only methods for UHMW.<\/p>\n Machining: <\/strong>UHMW can be sawed, turned, planed, milled drilled, stamped, and welded easily on woodworking or metalworking machines. The optimum cutting speed is between 250 and 1,000 m\/min.
